Application Steps

Before proceeding, please download the general guidelines and read them carefully.

Application for AY2023 spring admission is now closed. Information of AY2023 fall or 2024 spring admission will be available around the end of May 2023.

STEP 1

Check eligibility & Contact to Prospective Supervisor

  • Please check the eligibility requirements first.

See p.1 (Master’s) / p.11 (Doctoral) of the general guidelines.

  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to look up faculty with shared research interests & contact prospective supervisors.

  • This allows supervisor(s) to prepare for the examination, taking the applicant’s language ability and academic background into consideration.
  • If you need advise to find/contact to prospective supervisor, you can ask GSES International student adviser.

STEP 2

Dates & Deadline

  • Availability of admission : End of May/ beginning of December
  • Application period : July/January
  • Entrance examination : August/following February
  • Admission : April/October

Spring Admissions (starting from April – Spring semester)
Fall Admissions (starting from October – Autumn semester)

This is a general guide on graduate school admission in Japan. Actual schedules differ by the department and course.
For more details, please be sure to check the schedule for the course for which you wish to apply.

STEP 3

Documents Required

For AY2023, see pp.3-4 (Master’s) / pp.12-14 (Doctoral) of the general guidelines.

List of documents (refer to the guideline for more detail)

  1. Application Form
  2. Examinee’s Registration Card, Photograph card
    with a photograph (4×3 cm) taken within 3 months
  3. Curriculum Vitae/Resume
  4. Reason for Application
  5. Diploma or Certificate of Graduation or Expected Graduation
    from the university where the applicant pursued undergraduate studies
    (originals only & must be written in English/Japanese)
  6. Official Transcript (or Academic Record)
    from the university above, with the grade assessment standards
    (originals only & must be written in English/Japanese)
  7. Master’s Thesis/Research Thesis
    (only for doctoral, please choose one type of research thesis below);
    1. English abstract of Master’s thesis,
    2. photocopy of a co-authored paper published in an international journal
    3. photocopy of a co-authored abstract presented in an international meeting, instead of Master’s thesis.
  8. Application fee
    30,000 yen paid through the information terminal at the convenience store in Japan (refer to Appendix 1 in the guideline).

  9. TOEFL (iBT)/TOEIC (Listening & Reading Test)/IELTS (academic module) original score sheet
    (only for the Dept. of Earth & Environmental Sciences/Dept. of Environmental Engineering & Architecture, for self recommendation to the Dept. of Social & Human Environment)
  10. Self-Recommendation Letter
    (only for self-recommendation admission to the Dept. of Social & Human Environment)
  11. Essay
    (only for Master’s in the Sustainable Development Course in the Dept. of Environmental Engineering & Architecture)
  12. List of publications, awards & achievements
    (only for Sustainable Development Course in the Dept. of Environmental Engineering & Architecture)
  13. Research Proposal
    (only for Doctoral in Sustainable Development Course in the Dept. of Environmental Engineering & Architecture/Dept. of Social & Human Environment, Master’s in the Dept. of Social & Human Environment)
  14. Graduation thesis
    (only for Master’s in the Dept. of Social & Human Environment)
  15. A photocopy of your residence card
  16. A certificate of status
    issued by the university where applicant is currently enrolled (for applicants receiving a scholarship from the Japanese government)

STEP 4

Examination Method

  • Master’s Degree Program
    Written examination : English test, specialization subject (approx. 2-4 hours)
    Oral examination : motivation for applying, research plan, interview session with professors
  • Doctoral Degree Program
    Written examination : specialization subject (approx. 1 hour)
    Oral examination : Master’s program research, doctoral program research plan, interview session with professors

This is a general graduate school examination. Actual examination schedules differ by the department and course.

STEP 5

Notification of Selection Results

  • Official results will be announced in the graduate school around 2 weeks after the examination.
  • Letters of acceptance/rejection of application will be sent by post to each applicant.

STEP 6

Enrollment Procedures

Successful applicants will be notified of enrollment procedures by post in the beginning of March/September.

Successful applicants must register in person at the Office of Student Affairs, Graduate School of Environmental Studies.

Registration fee : JPY 282,000 (estimated) *to be paid by the date of registration
Tuition fee : JPY 267,900 (estimated) per semester
(for Spring Semester, to be paid in May and in April from the second year onwards; for Fall Semester, to be paid in October.)
